Fig. 15-1 The Complementary Color Wheel.  Ring #1 contains the standard spectrum colors, and Ring #2 contains their tints.  However, the dark shades in Ring # 3 are found through mixing complementary colors across the color wheel, rather than adding black to darken  the spectrum colors.  In Ring #4, the shades are lifted with white so all are the same value.  These "lifted compliments" are a necessary part of good color in representational painting, especially in regard to distant subjects.

Fig. 17-8A  INCORRECT: when we change values abruptly without any thought for the light source or a larger abstract value pattern, the result is a spotty painting like this.
